Beginner Guitar Tips

Sometimes beginners on the guitar become frustrated at what they perceive to be a lack of progress and wonder if the problem lies with them personally or their choice of guitar. Sometimes a cheap guitar can be behind lack of progress in guitar technique.

Start out with the best guitar you can afford. If you sacrifice quality in the name of economy you may not stay with leaning to play the guitar. This sometimes happens with parents who decide to pay for guitar lessons for their child but skimp on the actual instrument. The logic behind this sis that maybe the child won’t stay with the lessons so you do not want to lose too much money in buying the guitar. Really, if you get a cheap guitar you are not giving yourself a fair chance at succeeding in learning to play.

When you buy a guitar get someone who knows something aboutr guitars to check it out for you before you hand over your money. As a novice, you may not be able to spot flaws that are obvious to someone who has done some playing.

Another question beginner guitar players ask a lot is about the difficulty in learning the guitar compared to other instruments. The answer is that stringed instruments in general could be considered to be a little harder to learn that a keyboard instrument. Although learning chords on the piano involves learning to use your hands in a new way, the added discipline of applying the correct pressure on the strings adds to the difficulty of learning to play the guitar.

]]>

But really the idea of one instrument being harder to play than another lies only at the very beginning of musical training. Once you are over the hump of getting simple tunes and chords from the guitar, progress will be much more rapid and you will be able to enjoy the advantages the guitar has over other instruments.

Now we com to the question of whether or not to get a guitar teacher or learn by yourself. First of all, it IS possible to learn to play the guitar by yourself without the benefit of a teacher. But as you begin to learn to play, the challenge of learning a skill that involves using your body in an entirely unfamiliar way can often be too much. A few lessons with a qualified guitar teacher will help with the inevitable questions that come up in your mind as you attempt to learn chord changes and scales.

Another question for beginners is whether to learn to read music and guitar theory. Well, some people actually enjoy the process of reading guitar books and magazines, searching for the chords for their favorite songs and finding out how to turn scales into solos. Others want the learning curve to be as flat as possible. If you do not want to go to too much trouble to learn guitar, then you could learn to read tab, which should take about half and hour, and find the guitar tabs for songs that you know and love.

If you want to learn music other that what you are already familiar with, then take the time to learn to read music. It really isn’t hard and it will give you versatility and the ability to quickly learn music from many different genres.

Teaching Chords To Beginning Guitar Students

A very common and frustrating problem beginning guitar students face is not being able to change chords quickly, fluently and musically. This may be frustrating for you, the guitar teacher, too, when you are not sure about how to solve the problem.

There can be more than one reason why a student may struggle when trying to change chords smoothly. So the first thing to do when dealing with this challenge is to diagnose why the problem exists. You need to determine if your student has one of the following problems:

A. A physical coordination problem
B. He/she has not been practicing
C. A lack of understanding of what needs to be done
D. A mental processing problem

Most guitar teachers ASSUME the reason is either A. (a physical coordination problem) or B. (little or no practice). Fact is, most of the time this is wrong. The majority of students actually DO attempt to practice. And TRUE physical coordination problems are rare.

For most guitar students almost all guitar playing problems are caused by their brains, not by their hands! This is why many efforts to help them may not work well.

As I mentioned before, there can many reasons why a student is struggling with this (or any other issue) so it is not possible to give a one-size-fits-all solution in an article. There are however 3 powerful guitar teaching tips that can help solve this problem with beginning guitar students.

]]>

#1. Get your students to keep their strumming hand moving IN TIME no matter how far behind the fretting hand may be in forming the next chord. In other words, tell your students (when practicing this way) to NOT allow the strumming hand to wait on the fretting hand! Practicing in this way will solve a lot of other rhythm and timing problems in the future for this student! The student should practice this way about 1/3 of the time until the problem is resolved.

#2. Get your student to not use the strumming hand at all and simply change chords with the fretting hand quickly (rapid fire, one after another). The student should practice this way about 1/3 of the time until the problem is resolved.

#3. Make your student play a chord he/she needs to master. Tell him/her to grip the strings hard when playing the chord, then to relax totally (WITHOUT taking fingers away from the strings/chord), then tell the student to SQUEEZE again all fingers at the same time! Then relax.

The goal here is to train his/her brain to make all fingers move and relax TOGETHER and not one finger at a time (which is how beginning guitar students make chords on their own – big mistake)… Repeat this exercise until the student can do it well.

Next, have the student move fingers off the strings but maintain the basic chord shape while hovering over the strings…. Then press down on the strings and make the chord… repeat this many times and then gradually move further and further away from the strings before making the chord again. Eventually from an open hand the student should be able to form the chord easily… but in each case you MUST be sure all fingers are moving and relaxing at the same time, NOT one finger at a time! The student should practice this way about 1/3 of the time until the problem is resolved.

Notice that these solutions of the problem are all ‘physical’, but they are designed to overcome the student’s “mental processing problem” because the student has not learned to separate and isolate each motion.  The beginning guitar student’s brain is overloaded with too much information to apply at the same time, this is why we work on method #1 and #2 above to free the brain from too much processing at once. The last method (#3) is designed in order to break the student’s mental processing habit of sending SEPARATE and LINEAR messages to each finger of the hand. What we want is to train the brain to process and send ONE message to all fingers involved.

Buying the Right Guitar-Best Guitar Tips for Beginners

Is this your first guitar purchase? When you are new to playing the guitar, it is only natural to be anxious about which guitar should you purchase and how much you should shell out for it. Most important issues rest on the quality and playability of your instrument. The type of guitar you choose depends on the kind of music you want to play. If you want to sound like Bob Dylan or Jack Johnson, you probably want an acoustic guitar. On the other hand if you want to play folk, alternative, jazz, flamenco, etc.  your choice would be a classical guitar. Electric guitars are differentiated by their pickups, one is a single coil pickup and the other is a humbuckers. Humbuckers sound great with distortion, so they’re the pickups of choice for the hard rockers, while the single coil pickups have a brighter tone and thus preferred for un-distorted guitar playing.

]]>

What should be the size of my guitar? It is very important to be, as well as look comfortable while you hold a guitar. Most children up to their teen years may want to start on a ¾ size guitar. A quality ¾ size guitar will normally sound very good, but have a less “full” tone than a full-size guitar. Most adults will choose a full-size guitar. Most full size guitars will be 37 to 38 inches in length and have a fret board with 21 frets. One must ask a salesperson to help you decide if your guitar fits.

Some technicalities you should look into before choosing the right guitar: Tuning machine keys should operate smoothly. The fingerboard should be level with the top of the guitar. Most guitars should have an adjustable truss rod. A functional truss rod will usually make slight changes in a neck with as little as a 1/4 to 3/4’s of a turn. Neck angles that are too far forward or backward will tend to have or develop adjustment problems. A helpful visual indicator of a good neck angle is a bridge that is about as high off the top or soundboard of the guitar as the fingerboard. String height or action at the nut should be low at the first fret, which results in all six strings being easy to play.

How much should you spend on your first guitar purchase? A good beginner acoustic guitar will range from Rs.2500/- to 7000/- Average price of acoustic guitar for beginners can be around Rs.3500/-

Higher the price the better is the wood quality and craftsmanship that makes it a good sounding acoustic guitar. As acoustic guitar does not have any amplification it is very necessary that it sounds good!

If it’s your electric guitar, choices are more as many brands are available in different shapes and specification. A starting range of electric guitar is from Rs 4,000/- onwards; of course a branded one starts from around Rs.8000-9000/- onwards. Many Indian stores have a good websites now-a day’s which gives complete details of their product range and even specifications for all their guitars which can help one to choose the right guitar for himself. So you can always check the product reviews before you actually check them.
